My mother turned 80 earlier this year, and my siblings and I all wanted to do something really special for her.
Mom was never one to complain, and for decades she selflessly took care of four kids all by herself, while working full time to pay the bills.
She was enjoying her retirement, and now that us kids were all grown and successful, we wanted to pool our resources and get her a luxury item she would never get for herself. When we talked about it, we all paid notice of how Mom always had very cold feet, even while wearing slippers. It was costly but getting her a new radiant heated flooring system for her house would be something she could enjoy for years to come. While she was out, I went over with an HVAC tech and did an inspection of the house to get an estimate on the total cost, and total time needed to do the job. The HVAC tech said that my mom’s house had great pipes, which would make the job a lot easier. We ended up being able to afford the price, between the four of us, but getting her out of the house so the HVAC company could work was more challenging. They would need two days to get the new heating system fully installed in the first story flooring. We thought about trying to lure her out of the house so she wouldn’t know, but mom is pretty smart so we were honest and told her about the new heating system she was getting.
