Giving up gym membership

When we bought our own house and moved out of the city and into the country, we gained a lot more privacy, square footage and property.

Finally having a yard where the kids can play has been wonderful.

A garage for the cars, a much bigger kitchen and more closet space have been major improvements. We were able to let the kids have a dog and we’re talking about installing a pool. We’re located in a much safer neighborhood now, and the kids are attending a higher rated school. However, we are a much further drive from the amenities of the city. At one time, a wide variety of restaurants, coffee shops and shopping was within walking distance. Now, we always need to drive to everything. For the first year after purchasing our house, I attempted to maintain my gym membership. I really didn’t want to give it up. I liked having access to such a wide range of exercise equipment. I enjoyed taking group fitness classes several times per week. I’d make friends with people who attended the gym with me. In the end, the drive was simply too far. I couldn’t spend all that extra time in the car driving back and forth. It got where I was dreading heading to the gym or skipping it altogether simply because of a hectic schedule. The answer to the problem was to set up a home gym. We have plenty of space in the basement for my workout equipment. At first, I didn’t have much to work with. I initially bought a set of free weights, a yoga mat and jump rope. The bigger workout machines are extremely expensive. I did lots of research, saved up and finally purchased a treadmill. I’ve since added a stationary bike. When the weather allows, I run or bike outside. While I miss the many perks of a gym membership, I figured out a personal workout strategy that is a decent substitute.
