Heater spreads exhaust fumes in the house

My husband finds it necessary to run his car for several minutes in the morning in order to warm it up.

I get that we live in an area that gets a lot of snow but studies have shown that warming up a car really does no good.

It wastes gas and only heats up the car about 1 minute quicker than just driving it does. This is despite the fact that the car is left running for several minutes. My husband and I have argued about this many times. It wouldn’t bother me so much except for the fact that the utility closet is in the garage. That means that the heater picks up exhaust fumes and spreads them throughout the whole house. Yes my husband leaves the garage door open and yes the air intake vent for the heater is inside the house. However, there must be gaps in the ductwork or something because the whole house still smells like exhaust every single morning. I can’t stand it!. The door to the garage is sealed tight so it has to be the heater that is spreading the exhaust fumes. I am tired of fighting about it though so I decided to call up an HVAC company and have them do some ductwork sealing instead. I told them to concentrate their efforts on the ductwork in the garage. They sealed up the ductwork throughout the entire house and guess what? No more exhaust fumes! I am super happy about that. Now I don’t have to worry about dying just so my husband can go on thinking his car is warming up faster.
