My father had absolute faith in my ability to run the HVAC company.
I knew different.
Not only was I not able to run a HVAC company, but I didn’t want to run it. My father had put the HvAC company in my name when I began to work there. He wanted to make sure that if anything ever happened to him, the business would be mine. I told dad that I would never be ready for such a prestigious position, but he didn’t believe me. Twenty years later, dad decided it was time to go. He had been having some health issues that were making it difficult for him to work. I asked him what I was going to do. He told me that he had everything in order. If I had questions, I could ask him or the secretary. He said he could easily do the job. I had to turn to the secretary more times than I thought I would. I was hating the job. I called my father several times because I couldn’t even keep the books straight. I was sending the business right down the tubes. After six months, I was afraid the company was going to go under. I went to my dad’s house and told him I couldn’t do this. I told him that I didn’t want to run the business, but I wanted to be a HVAC technician. He asked me what I wanted to do? I told him that it would be best if he sold the company and let someone who knew what they were doing run the business. I would stay there to make sure the HVAC techs were secure. He shrugged and told me to do what I thought was best for the HVAC company.
