I thought my sister was a royal pain.

My sister and I never really got along. Not only was I the big brother, but I was six year older than she was. When dad died, mom got really depressed. She didn’t care about anything except that she no longer had dad. Six months later, mom passed away. This left me, a sixteen year old boy, to take care of his ten year old sister. My grandmother took us to live with her, but she was in her fifties. She didn’t want to have a teenage boy and a ten year old girl living there. I promised that as soon as I could, I would get out and take care of my sister. Grandma was good about us being there, but I knew it was a strain on her. I had just graduated from high school when my grandmother handed me a check. It was what was left from my mother’s and father’s insurance. I knew what I was going to do. I asked Grandma if it would be okay for my sister to stay there while I went to school. I got my certification in HVAC that following year. It took another year for me to have enough money saved to get an apartment. I worked hard for the next couple years. I was the top HVAC technician in my HVAC company. I also met a really nice young woman who happened to be the daughter of the HVAC company. Together, we took care of my sister, and four years later, she graduated from high school. Thanks to my HVAC job, and the help of my wife, we were able to send my sister to college. She is now the intern who is helping my wife to have our baby.
