Should have never tried working on the air conditioner

It was a fail from the very second I moved beyond what I was told to do.

  • The HVAC technician explained to me once that if I was to run into a situation where the HVAC equipment wasn’t working, check the power.

If the thing has power but there is no heating and cooling, then don’t do anything further. At this point, the HVAC technician suggested, I should simply pick up the phone and call the HVAC company. I mean I was told in no uncertain terms by an actual HVAC professional just how to act in the event of an air conditioning breakdown. Still, I didn’t listen. What is wrong with me? I came home from work to find a really hot house. The air conditioning had obviously been off for much of the day. There wasn’t a lot of difference between the outside temperature and inside. At least the outside had a bit of a breeze. Perhaps it was this sense of urgency to get the house cooling again that led me to take the panel off the air handler. What I was looking for, I have zero idea. But I managed to do more damage to the HVAC equipment and not get anywhere close to getting the HVAC cooling back on. My wife simply was fed up and called the HVAC company. The HVAC technician came out and the original problem was a super quick and inexpensive fix. However, my dumb messing around resulted in damaging and expensive HVAC component. That was sort of fitting that the original problem with the HVAC unit was minor. And it was me that turned the situation into a major problem.
