DIY air conditioner repair

When I noticed some issues with the central air conditioner, I tried to hide the problems from my husband.

My husband likes to fix things.

He has invested into a huge inventory of tools and believes himself to be handy. When he repaired my vacuum cleaner, I needed to buy a new one. When he repaired the ceiling fan in my bedroom, I could no longer use the light feature. I was afraid that his efforts would force me to buy a brand new air conditioner. My complaints with the cooling system were diminished airflow, musty smells and a greater concentration of dust floating around. Although the air conditioner was still operational, I called for professional repair immediately. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get an appointment for over a week. The weather that week was especially hot and humid, making the air conditioner essential. I knew I was in trouble when my husband started fiddling with the thermostat. He asked me if the house felt overheated and then got out his tools. I explained that I’d already set up a service appointment, but that didn’t deter him. He took the outer cabinet off and found a significant buildup of dust inside. There was mold growing on the cooling coil and algae thriving in the condensate drain. My husband spent all day carefully cleaning all of the components. When he put the air conditioner back together, I doubted that the cooling system would start up. However, it ran perfectly. The complaints with cooling capacity, comfort and air quality were solved. I was able to cancel my appointment with the HVAC company and save that money.
