She wanted to do something different.

My sister was always the nonconformist.

When I was younger I didn’t know what that meant.

She was different from the rest of us, but I always thought she was cool. Mom would buy her pretty clothes and she always hated them. She wanted nothing but black and white, and she would have gladly gotten rid of the white. The only color she wore was the bright red lipstick she always had on. Even though my sister was almost thirteen years older than I, I always wanted to be with her. She would take me whenever she went anywhere but on a date or to work. She worked as a waitress at the local restaurant. She said that the only reason she liked the job was because the uniform was black and white. When she graduated high school, mom told her it was time she got a real job. She told me she was going to leave before she worked at any of the businesses in our town. Then one day, she left home. She told me she was going to do something different and be something different. I missed my sister, but I got a text from her every day. Then one day, she said she was coming home. I couldn’t wait to see her. When she showed up, she had a man with her. She told mom she had met him at work. He was an HVAC technician. Mom wanted to know what she did there. Sis told her she was an HVAC technician. Her fiance trained her and while working on a furnace, he asked her out. They were going to open an HVAC company in our town.
