Heating system not turning on

When he came over he saw that the thermostat wires were cut

Coming back home from vacation is sometimes stressful. Not only do you have to unpack but you have to get things ready for the next day and on vacation your home. what I mean by that is when my husband and I go away for a few days or weeks at a time, we will lock all of our windows close the drapes, and set our thermostat to the desired temperature that will keep our home comfortable so pipes won’t break during the winter time, and mold and mildew won’t grow during the summertime. When we came back home from vacation the last time, for some reason our thermostat was not working. We thought maybe it was the batteries so we took the batteries out and changed them. Then we put new batteries in and saw the thermostat still was not working. We figured it had to be some kind of wiring malfunction. That was definitely out of our expertise and we didn’t want to mess up the problem even more so that’s when we called our our hvac technician. We’ve had the same hvac technician for the past five years. He does a very thorough job in doing the maintenance and cleaning our hvac system. When he came over he saw that the thermostat wires were cut. He pulled the wires out of the wall and it seemed as if mice got into them. He told us that maybe we should call pest control to come to the house and set a few traps. Then he installed a brand new thermostat for us and within the next two hours we were able to have our hvac system running again.
