Take Care of it Now

During the hottest part of the summer, the last thing you’re probably thinking about it doing a tune up on your furnace! I know that around here where we live, the weather gets to be ridiculously hot.

The temperature outside can be above a hundred degrees on some days, and then the humidity is miserable too! And so when the outside temperatures are that high, the last thing on your mind is your heating system that’s sitting down in the basement.

At least that’s how it is with me. Last year, though, I was talking to a friend of mine who owns a local HVAC contractor business. He told me that the best time of the year to get a tune up on your heating system is during the summer when it’s not running all the time. That way, your furnace – whether it’s a heating pump, a gas furnace, an electric furnace, a boiler, or whatever – has a chance to cool down and the HVAC technicians who are taking a look at it can see exactly what needs to be done to keep it well maintained. The other thing is that your furnace or heating unit can get really grimy and dusty throughout the summer, and so it’s a good idea to have an HVAC technician come and clean it thoroughly. Sometimes you have to take some of the heating components apart to get it all the way cleaned. If you do that in the winter, you’re going to be in for a cold day with no heating! So this summer, when you’re running your A/C at full speed, take a moment to think about your heater that’s languishing away down in your basement. Take care of it now, so you won’t have to think about it when the winter comes again!
