Keeping the gas furnace clean is key

A gas furnace is quite a bit of love and care.

There are certain things you need to do to keep it afloat.

Why do you want to put so much effort into this system? Well for one a gas heater can easily get clogged with dust. When it gets dusty everything has to work harder to provide heating. That means there is more natural heat going on inside the system. It is very common for a dirty furnace to light on fire due to overheating. Another concern is the heat exchanger overheating and cracking. A microscopic crack can cause a huge problem. Carbon monoxide can then leak into the home and slowly poison the occupants. This gas is odorless, tasteless and colorless. You can’t detect it without a specific carbon monoxide detector. Not many homes actually own them as well. Over time if you are exposed to this gas you will get sick to the point of hospitalization. Some people have died from it. It is way safer to just keep the gas heater clean. Start with the air filter and regularly replace it monthly. The blower needs a bit of cleaning and oil once in a while too. All the inner workings really should be checked for dust, rust and corrosion. The easiest solution is to schedule heating maintenance every fall. That way you know all the parts are properly cleaned, lubricated and working. You can catch a small heater repair before it graduates to a big problem. It is the most cost effective solution to owning a gas furnace.
