The AC keeps icing over

My home air conditioner is a hunk of junk. The machine constantly is freezing over. I called a local air conditioning business and I appreciated their honesty. The guy said that there was no point in replacing it with new. The HVAC technician told me I could get a few years out of it if I was willing to put in sme work. I need to regularly change the air filter, dethaw the whole machine and have AC service at least once a year. Basically if I let the device clog with dust, then it will freeze over and be worthless. I hate messing with my cooling system several times a year. The guy has a point though. The AC still does technically work. Once it is cleaned and thawed I do have a proper cooling system for quite awhile. The cost of the AC service is so small compared to a brand new system. Really the only thing to factor in is my time and effort towards the old unit. I really think I am not going to last a few years. It really stinks taking a hairdryer to the side of my AC device. I don’t like chipping away the ice and having a mess afterwards. I would much rather know I have a clean, efficient system running reliably. I also know my AC bills would probably decrease since a new system would be energy smart. Perhaps at the turn of the New Year I will treat myself to a brand new AC device. I feel I have earned it.
