Change your air filter and clean your drain line!

Heating ventilation and air conditioning systems can be complex machines.

There’s no doubt that advanced technology goes into making sure that you are able to change the climate within your home. However, that does not mean that there aren’t a few extremely important preventative maintenance tasks that you as a homeowner can perform to help keep your HVAC system running well. One of the most important things is changing your air filter on a regular basis. The air filter is best checked every month to examine the build-up of dirt and determine whether or not it needs to be replaced. If the air filter is sufficiently dirty and light has trouble passing through it, you’re going to want to change it out for a fresh one. Another very easy task for a homeowner concerning maintaining their HVAC system is to prevent a clogged condensate line. Routinely cleaning the condensate drain line every month is a great way to prevent any clogs from developing. All you need to do is turn off your air conditioner to start with. Then, if you have not already, locate your condensate drain line access point. It is a PVC pipe typically in a t-shape with a removable cap. Remove the cap and pour 1/4 a cup of distilled vinegar into the pipe. You should wait at least a half an hour before turning your HVAC system back on to let the vinegar flush the system. You can inspect both the exit point of your drain line, which is typically located next to the outdoor unit of your HVAC system, and the access point of the drain line for blockage to determine if cleaning with vinegar is necessary.
