Turning off the heater saved my car engine

I was on my way home from work a couple of weeks ago, and I had to stop on the side of the highway, however it was very cold outside and I was running the heating system on high.

I was wearing a pair of gloves, but my fingers and hands were still very cold.

I called my boyfriend on the phone, when I observed that the temperature in the car was getting warmer, and the dial in the center of the car was moving and I never noticed the orange arm getting closer and closer to the red line. Even though I do not know much about cars and engines, I knew that was a bad sign. I called my boyfriend and the first thing he said was to turn off the heater. I hesitated for a minute, because it was only 17 degrees outside, and he told me that it would help cool the engine if the heating system was off. I drove another five or six miles, but the temperature gauge never dropped. I finally pulled over to the side of the highway and I waited for my boyfriend to come check on the car, and one of the radiator hoses was loose. It was a very easy fix, but it could have caused a lot of big problems to the engine. I was happy that my boyfriend was right around the corner when I called for help. He works at a pizza shop very close to the interstate and he is going to night school for auto repair. I knew he would be able to help.
